Family Circle put together this quick video on how to save money on your utilities. They focus on the fact that utilities devour up to 12% of the average family’s annual income. We want to find ways to help you keep more of that money. The first recommended tip is to start with a programmable thermostat. They can cost as little as $25, and will automatically turn down the heat or air conditioning when you’re away from home or sleeping. They suggest that maximizing this programmable device can save up to 10% per year.
Fight the “vampire drain” of electricity that comes from appliances and electronics in stand by mode. That’s when they are turned off but still plugged into the wall and drawing power. Instead plug your devices into a fuse protected power strip which doesn’t suck energy when it is turned off.
Curb water bills by replacing old shower head and faucets with low flow aerating models. Be on the look out for models that support 2.5 gallons/minute or less. This could save the average family 700 gallons of water per year, and means less of your hard-earned cash would be going down the drain.
